Many brides start off their wedding dress search without a clue regarding dress design and construction — SO DID WE! This is where our experts come in. Our Stylists will guide you through the entire process, and trust us when we say this – making a custom dress is NOT as daunting as it may sounds.

Below is a compiled list of some of the common terms you might hear during the process. We know it is a lot, and we obviously won’t quiz you on any of this! We just wanted to share this for you to use as your go-to dictionary when creating your wedding dress.

A

ANOMALIE 

We are a Custom Wedding Dress Company that is disrupting a broken industry to help better serve brides. Anomalie is able to deliver a higher level of quality and customization for a better price than any other option in the bridal industry.

A-LINE

One of our many skirt silhouettes, an A-line skirt is a skirt that is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A for a flattering fit.

APPLIQUE

A technique that allows us to place lace by hand throughout your dress in an organic way to scatter or make gradient throughout the garment.

APEX

A neckline depth that hits directly in the center of your chest right in between the breasts offering a standard cut to the dress.

B

BODICE

The bodice refers to the top portion of your dress, from the waist up covering your front and back.

BUSTLE

A bustle is a technique created to transform your dress from having a train to being able to ‘bustle’ it up and transform it to function as if it has no train. This is something that Anomalie has you take care of with a local seamstress or tailor once your dress arrives so that the bustle falls and sweeps the floor in the exact right way – only something you can alter in person with a tailor. 

BELT

An accessory you can choose to add around the waistline which can either be a satin sash or beaded belt.

BEADING

We offer a variety of beadwork that can be added to your wedding dress, which can be either scattered or dense.

BONING

Boning is support that is constructed within the bodice that helps your dress maintain its hold and structure. 

BOATNECK NECKLINE

Also called a bateau neck, is a wide neckline that runs horizontally, front and back, almost to the shoulder points, across the collarbone.

BELL SLEEVE

A long sleeve that tends to flare out towards the elbow creating a bell look.

BISHOP SLEEVE

A long sleeve that is flowy and cuffed at the wrist.

BASQUE WAIST

A style of waistline that goes further down past the natural waist and is often plunges downward in the shape of a ‘V’.

BROCADE FABRIC

We have sourced a handful of beautiful Brocade fabrics which have a thicker woven raised pattern throughout. This is a great option if you are looking for a more structured look with an all over pattern.

BUTTONS

A closure option offered for the back of your dress or sleeves. You can choose decorative or functional buttons on your dress.

BLUSHER VEIL

A blusher is an additional shorter piece of a veil that is worn over a bride’s face during the ceremony and can be lifted back to unveil her.

CIRCLE SKIRT

One of our many skirt silhouettes, a circle skirt is cut in the shape of a circle at the waist. This silhouette falls naturally and hangs smoothly from the waist 

CAP SLEEVE

A cap sleeve is the shortest sleeve length offered past a wide strap, extending only a short distance from the shoulder and tapering to nothing under the arm

COLORS

Anomalie offers a variety of colors within our wedding color palette. Our standard colors include Snow White, Soft White, Champagne, Nude, Stone Grey, Blue Belle, Blush, Orchid, Black, Lilac, and Sparkle Tulles

CAPE

An accessory that flows behind typically attached at the shoulders or tied around the neck to be worn throughout the ceremony. 

CUPS

We add built in cups to most of our Anomalie dresses to offer coverage and support throughout the bodice, can we get a hell yeah for not having to wear a  bra?!

CHIFFON

Chiffon is a sheer fabric made of silk that is often used with a Circle Skirt silhouette.

CREPE

Crepe is a fabric that has a natural drape and cling to it, often used with a Sheath or Fit/Flare silhouette. This fabric is opaque. 

CHANTILLY LACE

Chantilly lace is a very delicate mesh lace fabric used as a sheet lace. 

CHARMEUSE

Charmeuse is a fabric that is very lightweight and silky with a natural drape.

COWL NECKLINE

A cowl neckline drapes down with rounded folds around the neckline, which usually falls below the collarbone.

COURT TRAIN LENGTH

This train length is right in the middle of all the train options! This is a great choice if you are wanting to have some length behind you but not too much. This train comes just about two feet behind you from the floor.

CHAPEL TRAIN LENGTH 

A chapel train is a perfect option for the bride who wants drama behind her but doesn’t want to commit to the full cathedral length! It comes just about 3 feet behind you giving you a spectacular amount of train!

CATHEDRAL TRAIN LENGTH

This is the longest train length Anomalie offers and is perfect for the bride who wants some drama behind her! This train comes a full four feet behind you from the floor giving you a cathedral/royal look! 

D

DETACHABLE OFF-THE-SHOULDER SLEEVE

If you want to create a sleeve look that can be removable we can create a sleeve cuff that can be attached to the dress!

DROP WAIST

A drop waist is a waistline that hits below the natural waist positioned closer to the hips.

DUPIONI SILK

Dupioni is a tightly woven silk with a highly lustrous surface. Dupioni is used to create bridal gowns with immense volume and that retain their form  

E

EMPIRE WAIST

An empire waist is a waistline that hits above the natural waist hitting just below the bust, giving the dress a high waisted look.

EYELASH LACE

This type of lace has a very delicate finish that resembles the look of ‘eyelashes’ which is where the name comes from!

EMBROIDERY

Embroidery is a type of embellishment that is done by hand to create a pattern or saying on fabric, at Anomalie you can get your wedding date embroidered on to your dress for example!

F

FINGERTIP LENGTH VEIL

A fingertip length veil hits from the crown of your head to your fingertips when you are standing straight up with your hand down by your side. This is a great option if you are wanting a medium length veil – not too long or too short. 

FLUTTER SLEEVES

A cap sleeve is a short to medium length sleeve that is whimsical and flowy! This type of sleeve looks very delicate and is a perfect option for the bride wanting a loose fitting sleeve with a whimsical look!

FLOOR LENGTH TRAIN

This is a train option for the bride who does not want any excess fabric behind the dress, this option of train will just hit the floor and stop.

FLORAL LACE

Anomalie has a wide variety of laces, floral lace is prominently organic floral patterns throughout and is offered as appliques or sheet laces.

G

GODET FLARE

A godet flare gives the back of a dress a different look, it is an additional piece of fabric that is added into the skirt to create a visually larger and wider flare. 

GUIPURE LACE

Guipure lace has its own unique look and style, it is a thicker type of lace often made up of different patterns.

GEOMETRIC LACE

Geometric lace is a symmetric patterned lace that has more lines and swirls than a flower look!

GEORGETTE

Georgette is a fabric that is sheer and lightweight offering a slightly silkier look..

H

HALTER NECKLINE

A halter neckline is a strap that connects from the front of the dress around the neck and often leaves the back open or semi open. A racerback is also a common option for the back of a halter neckline

HIGH-LOW

A high-low silhouette is exactly what it sounds like! The dress has a shorter length in the front and extends longer down in the back!

HOOK AND EYE CLOSURE

A hook and eye is a closure option that consists of a small metal hook and loop used together as a fastener on a dress.

I

ILLUSION MESH

Illusion mesh is fabric that does not have any lining beneath it. Options for illusion mesh is a skin tone color or the dress color. 

J

JACKET (BOLERO)

If you are looking to spice up your dress we have a variety of accessories, one being a bolero jacket that allows you to really change up the top portion of your wedding dress!

K

KEYHOLE

A keyhole is a cut out opening option that is a cut out on the dress. Keyholes are often used on the back of the dress to form a decorative exposed area.

L

LATTICE LACE

Lattice lace is a criss-cross look that gives a netting feel to the fabric. Lattice can be used on its own or combined with applique laces.

M

MIKADO SILK

Mikado is a luxurious heavy weight fabric with ribbed texture and sheen. This fabric is very structured and will keep the shape of the dress in movement.

MOCK NECK NECKLINE

A mock neck is a higher neckline that hits above the collarbones.

N

NUDE LINING

If you are looking for a contrasting two-tone dress, using a nude lining beneath our soft white lace is a great option to help make the lace pop! 

O

ORGANZA FABRIC

Organza is a thin, stiff, transparent fabric made of a synthetic yarn. This fabric is best suited for A-line dresses or dresses with minimal lace.

OVERSKIRT

An overskirt is an additional accessory that can be added to a dress to give it a two-in-one look! Adding an overskirt can completely transform the overall look by changing the skirt shape. Overskirts can either be open in the front or completely closed.

OPAQUE

If you do not want something to be sheer then it will be opaque.

P

PLEATS

A pleat is a fold on the skirt, and there are multiple kinds including gathers, knife pleats, box pleats, and wide box pleats.

PLUNGING

A plunging neckline is one that plunges down further than the apex or underbust. We often will add a sheer illusion panel over a plunging neckline.

PRINCESS SEAMS

Princess seams are long rounded or straight seams that are sewn into the bodice and skirt to add a tailored fit closely following the curves of your body. These are used mostly in fitted dresses.

PETTICOAT

A petticoat will be used  to add additional volume underneath a skirt to form the shape, these are used in A-lines and Ballgowns. 

PEARLS

Pearls are a type of beading we offer (we have a beading option called Pearlfection)  and can be used as buttons on the back of your dress as an enclosure.

Q

QUEEN ANNE NECKLINE

The Queen Anne neckline is a neckline with a regal cut featuring a high collar in the back, and a dipped neckline, usually a scoop or v-neck cut, in the front.

R

RUCHING

Ruching is a decorative look created when fabric is gathered along a seam to provide decoration or fullness. This style gives off a scrunched look.

RHINESTONE

An option of beading we offer to add sparkle and shine to your dress!

S

SCOOP NECKLINE

A round wide cut neckline is low and open.

SPAGHETTI STRAP

A spaghetti strap is a very thin strap connecting over the shoulder.

SHEATH SILHOUETTE

A sheath silhouette is a fitted straight cut dress, naturally flowing down.

SILHOUETTE

Silhouette refers to the overall shape of the dress.

SQUARE NECKLINE

A square neckline is a wide open neckline that forms a square-shaped frame around the collarbone.

SATIN

Satin is a soft, heavy lustrous fabric composed of a satin polyester weave.

SLIT

If you are looking to add a spicy element to your dress you can add a narrow slit on your skirt to open it up and show a little bit of leg! You can choose to have your slit be on your left leg, right leg, or centered in the middle!

SASH

A sash is a waist band option to break up the dress a bit and add an elegant element.

SKIN TONE ILLUSION

Skin tone illusion is used to give the illusion that there is nothing there. It is often used on necklines or sleeves to blend into the skin and look rather invisible! It is also used on plunging necklines to offer extra structure.

SWEEP LENGTH TRAIN

This is a train length option for the bride who wants a minimal train but still wants to have a little bit of fabric come behind the dress. This length is about one foot behind you once it touches the floor.

T

TEA LENGTH

A tea length dress is one that is shorter and hits below the knee or above the ankle.

TRAIN LENGTHS

At Anomalie we offer a variety of train lengths that include floor length, sweep length, court length, chapel length, and cathedral length. Our shortest is about one foot behind you and our longest is a long four feet behind!

TRIMS

Trims can be used on necklines, sleeves, and the hem of your skirt! It is a way to add a delicate element to an edge, we offer lace and beading trims!

TAFFETA

Taffeta is a crisp, smooth, plain woven fabric made from silk. 

TULLE

A soft nylon netting used to create fluid silhouettes or silhouettes with a considerable amount of volume. This fabric is best used in dresses that incorporate lace and beading.

TIERS

If you are wanting texture and movement in your skirt, adding tiers allows different overlapping layers of fabric to flow throughout giving it a whimsical look. 

TWO-PIECE 

A two-piece allows you to have a separate top and skirt that match! This is a  fun option if you are wanting to put a unique twist on your wedding dress!

U

UPPER BUST

The upper bust is a neckline depth option that hits above the bust offering a more modest option.

UNDERBUST

The under bust is a neckline depth option that hits right below the bust and below the center apex offering a bit of a lower option without it fully plunging.

V

V-NECK 

A straight or curved neckline that comes down in the shape of a V, this neckline can hit at all depths on the body  including the upper bust, apex, under bust, and plunging! 

W

WAISTBAND

An option we offer to have a piece of fabric divide the bodice from the skirt breaking up the dress. This can either be a satin sash or the same fabric as the dress and covers the waist seam.. The closure can either be a soft bow or hook & eye closure!

WAIST SEAM

This is the seam that connects the bodice to the skirt hitting at the natural waist, empire waist, or basque waist depending on the design.

Z

ZIPPER

Probably something you don’t typically  think about for your wedding dress, but also one of the most important parts. The zipper (which is hidden) is the enclosure that allows you to get in and out of your gorgeous custom dress! You can also do a zipper with decorative buttons on top to make it easier than functional buttons.
