Amy Shackelford the founder of Modern Rebel & Co knows a thing or two about weddings (or “love parties” as she calls them). She has been planning weddings for 4 years and specializes in events that give back to local non-profits. We picked her brain for meaningful ways to give back to your community at your wedding.

Avoid wasteful choices

If you’re doing favors, donate in your guest’s honor or pick something they’ll actually use. An amazing couple of ours decided to forgo traditional favors and had their guests pick out a book [they got married at a bookstore] and donate it to their favorite children’s literacy non-profit. They ended up donating $700 worth of books!

Also, a tiered wedding cake is usually a waste – nobody eats that much cake and lots of guests don’t even partake in dessert!

Get it in writing

When Amy Shackelford planned her own wedding, she requested that her caterers include a clause in the contract promising that they would compost. Other ideas include requesting that your floral designers use non-invasive floral species or asking your venue to recycle.

Choose a wedding planner who gives back to the community

The coolest thing we see with our couples and social media audience is more and more couples want to use their event as a platform for social change and greater impact. We partner with non-profits, so legitimately a couple gets married + a homeless kid goes to summer camp due to our financial donation commitment to Homes for the Homeless. It’s AWESOME!

Through each client event, Modern Rebel gives 5% of their profits to local non-profits that you pick.
